Going into it thinking it would be easy and quickly learning just how involved things are is extremely frustrating. You waste hours of your time on traffic waiting in lines as well as dealing with bureaucratic processes at various city agencies such as DERM (Department of Environmental Resources Management), WASA (Water Authority) Impact Fees, Fire Departments etc., which can all add up substantially depending on what type of building one wants to construct or renovate.

Common permit submission mistakes include:
· Missing signatures on the application
· Forgetting to have signatures notarized.
· Not having supporting documents or incomplete job site plans.

The most important thing about home renovations is the building permit. Without it, all of your efforts will be in vain because if an inspector finds out there isn’t one, they’ll shut down the project immediately. This can lead to fines and even legal action against you or anyone else involved with the project!

So The answer is yes, according to the 104.1.1 of the Florida Building Code: “Any owner, authorized agent, or contractor who desires to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy or occupant content of a building or structure, or any outside area being used as part of the building’s designated occupancy (single or mixed) or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert, or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by the technical codes, or to cause any such work to be done, shall first make application to the building official and obtain the required permit for the work.”
